The Age of Athleisure

Fashion has hit the epitome of comfort—athleisure. For those who aren’t familiar with the “official” term, athleisure is clothing designed for workouts and athletic activities while also being worn to places such as work, school, or other causal and/or social occasions. Athleisure outfits generally consist of yoga pants, tights, or leggings that look like athletic wear and are categorized as fashionable, dressed-up sweats and exercise apparel.

All Day, Every Day

Gym and workout clothing is no longer only acceptable at the gym—now everyone is wearing athleisure as everyday outfits. For the most part, tight-fitting, elastic yoga pants, leggings, zip front or hooded sweatshirts, and lace up or slip on tennis shoes are basic athleisure necessities that everyone is rocking. Ultimately, athleisure couples sporty and stylish. A few years ago, there was somewhat of a sportswear void within the retail market because active wear was merely focused on function versus style. Recently innovations within the textile and technology realms have aided in the improvement and overall functionality of active wear—creating items that are more breathable, light weight, and waterproof.

The Industry is Taking Notice

Big companies such as Nike and Adidas have amped up their game by producing fashionable athleisure items that consumers will feel comfortable wearing outside of the gym. Actress and business woman Kate Hudson saw the trend within athleisure early on and decided to co-found Fabletics.  Don Ressler and Adam Goldenberg, Just Fab Inc. Co-CEOs, launched Fabletics with Kate after they too saw the gap in the active wear market. There were a ton of luxury brands, but none of them offered stylish high-quality gear at a reasonable price.

“We create clothing that inspires you to stay active, whether that means competing in an iron(wo)man competition, sweating in the studio, or chasing after your kids. Our on-trend designs are high in quality at prices you’ll feel good about. This where the inspiration starts, Beyond the clothing, we foster a community of people who embrace our mantra— “Live Your Passion”—every day,” said Kate.

There’s No Stopping Athleisure

Since it’s official launch in 2013, Fabletics has been featured in Elle Magazine, In Style, Ok!, People, Redbook, Self, Shape, Women’s Health, USA Today, and many other widely viewed publications. Recently, Fabletics partnered with singer Demi Lovato for a new line of athleisure that is trendy and fun. According to an estimate published in Digiday, the athleisure market, including footwear, was $270 billion in 2016, and was estimated to grow by 30% by the year 2020.

Other celebrities are also key players in this fashion movement. Beyoncé released her line of active wear titled IVY PARK with TopShop, and Rihanna with Fenty x Puma—after Rihanna’s line debuted with Puma, the company’s net rose by 4% in 2016.

It’s Affordable!

Department stores such as Wal-Mart and Target have happily joined in on the fast fashion buzz by offering athleisure within their respective departments at cheaper prices. If you’ve walked into one recently, you’ll notice that the athleisure department has grown considerably. Athletic sections are now more prominent and showcase hip colors, patterns, and functionality.

No Rules

There’s no right or wrong way to wear sport athleisure. Basically, if you’re comfortable then you’ve got it! There are so many ways to embrace the athleisure trend—yoga pants, sweats, running shorts, hoodies, tennis shoes, wrist bands, head bands, baseball caps, and the list goes on. Whether you’re a man or woman, the athleisure trend is definitely something that will fit your day-to-day.
